  • Multiverses?

    Edward Martin|Jun 1, 2023

A friend is taking music lessons from a talented teacher. She’s in Japan, he’s in New York. That, by itself, is utterly astonishing to many of us older folks. She assigned him a piece of music which he thinks is too difficult for him. In encouragement she told him she wants him to relate to the music, not the individual notes. He’s focusing on trying to get the notes right. She’s telling him to get out of his own way and play the music. We’ve all had moments when we did something exceeding...

    Montana FWP|Jun 1, 2023

HELENA – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is again accepting applications for its Habitat Conservation Lease Program. A habitat conservation lease is a voluntary, incentive-based agreement between FWP and private landowners in which the landowner commits to specific land management practices that protect priority wildlife habitat. • Governor Gianforte signs MEPA bill into law

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Jun 1, 2023

Gov. Greg Gianforte has signed a bill that makes significant changes to the Montana Environmental Policy Act, a law that's used in legal challenges to mines, timber sales and power plants. On May 19, Gianforte signed Senate Bill 557, which changes how individuals and nonprofits can use MEPA to challenge a state permit. Proponents of the measure say it will level the playing field and ensure that groups challenging natural resource and industrial projects first establish "legitimacy." Opponents...

  • Things You Might Not Have Known About History

Nancy Royan, Librarian, Wedsworth Memorial Library|Jun 1, 2023

Over 2,400 years ago a Greek writer named Herodotus collected and reported eye-witness accounts of battles and other past events. He then analyzed their causes and effects. This essentially marked him as the world’s first true historian. Herodotus journeyed across Greece and the Mediterranean collecting all kinds of info, such as local customs and culture. In 440 BC, Herodotus ‘published’ his work by reading aloud to spectators at the Olympic Games. He called this work ‘Histories’ which means ‘inquiry’ in ancient Greek. His work tells us a lo...

Katheryn Houghton, KFF Health News, Montana Free Press|Jun 1, 2023

BOZEMAN - Sara Young packed a bag of essentials, gathered her kids, and fled her home to a refuge: an old, green house that blended in with the neighborhood in this southwestern Montana city. Nothing about the house identified it as a domestic violence shelter - it was hidden in plain sight. Young wasn't allowed to give anyone the address. The secrecy made her feel safe. But her roommate, a young mom, struggled to care for her baby without her family there to help. Some residents couldn't get...

The order from the bench came at the end of a three-and-a-half-hour court proceeding featuring Montana abortion providers, medical witnesses and state agency representatives. Attorneys representing Planned Parenthood of Montana, Blue Mountain Clinic and All Families Healthcare argued that the laws and rules curbing abortion procedures, r...
