Construction Resumes on I-15 Wolf Creek

WOLF CREEK, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are resuming construction on the I-15 Wolf Creek North and South project for the 2024 construction season. This year, crews will begin work on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 (I-15) in addition to some improvements in Wolf Creek.

Improvements planned for the northbound lanes of I-15 include removing approximately two feet of degraded roadway material and paving a new driving surface, upgrading the barrier rails, metal guardrails, and signage, adding road delineators (roadside markers) on inside curves, improving erosion control features, and resurfacing interstate ramps and crossroads in the Wolf Creek area. Additionally, crews will be upgrading storm drains in the town of Wolf Creek and curb ramps on Walsh Street, between Main Street and Recreation Road.

“As we move into the second year of this project, I’d like to remind drivers to slow down and use caution when traveling through the work zone in the Wolf Creek Canyon,” said Kas Manderle, MDT Great Falls District Engineering Project Manager. “We have a lot of work remaining on this project and look forward to making these improvements to the northbound lanes of I-15.”

Construction on this project began in spring 2023. During 2023, crews completely rehabilitated approximately seven miles of southbound I-15 through Wolf Creek. Rehabilitation work included removing approximately two feet of degraded roadway material and placing new fabric, crushed gravel base, and a new asphalt driving surface.

Workers will be present from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday unless otherwise specified.

Intermittent closures between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. are anticipated to allow escorting wide loads through the project area. MDT recommends seeking an alternative route if you need to travel through Wolf Creek during this time.

This project is anticipated for completion in summer 2025, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting.

The purpose of the project is to improve the driving surface and enhance roadway safety features on this seven-mile stretch of I-15. The extreme climate and numerous freeze/thaw cycles in the Wolf Creek Canyon have caused the roadway material to degrade to the point where routine maintenance is no longer practical.
