It's Supaman!

His name is Christian Parrish Takes The Gun, professionally known as Supaman. An Apsaalooke who grew up in Crow Agency, Montana, Supaman is also a Native dancer and a rapper who uses his performances to bring a message to his audiences. He brought his unique entertaining style to Cascade Public Schools Tuesday morning to WOW our students with an uplifting message of respect, honor, kindness, and love.

Scheduled for two performances, the elementary, coming first, with the junior high and high school following, this reporter attended the elementary session. His interactive style and story telling kept the kids engaged, participating, and thoroughly entertained. He spoke about the Native dances performed at PowWows and said that sometimes some of the people at the PowWows couldn't dance. Maybe they were in a wheelchair; you dance for them. Maybe they had recently lost a loved one; you dance for them. Maybe they were sick, you dance for them. It would lift up their spirits. He followed this by demonstrating one of the fancy war dances, and afterwards called for volunteers to come down where he taught them how to do a dance themselves, stressing creativity. (Even the teachers got in the act!)

Then it was time for some contemporary American music. Supaman has been the recipient of the MTV VMA award, the Nammy (Native American Music) Award, the North American Indigenous Image Award, as well as other honors for his music, and pretty soon he had the entire gym moving to his beats. He also brought down some volunteers again and had them create a rap beat!

He concluded his presentation reiterating his message of respect, honor, kindness, and love, urging them to live a sober life, and leading the students in the following pledge:

"I pledge to be the best I can be. If I fall down, I'll get up again. If I fall down again, I'm gonna get up again, cause I'm a champion! I pledge to be a champion everyday, to do my best to be drug-free and alcohol-free. To read books, be kind, be respectful, love myself, love others. I plege this in front of my friends, my teachers, in front of The Creator. Above everything, I pledge to myself to do my best every day." He ended by saying, "Now look up into the sky and say, 'I BELIEVE IT!' Close your eyes and say "I believe it."
